In order for basic commerce to take place, there needs to be an element of trust between the two trading partners. Each partner needs to be confident that they are getting the goods for which they bargained. If you are trading goods with a neighbor, then you know the person and you can use your knowledge of that person’s integrity as an assurance, but as large towns and trading posts grew up in the world, people began trading with strangers who they not only had never met before, but whom they would in all likelihood never see again. This led to the development of scales and standard measures to provide an impartial method of determining the amount of goods being offered.
Merchants’ scales offered a form of proof that the measures being touted by the merchant were accurate. The earliest of these were balance scales. You could put a thing on one side and another on the other side of the balance and see very plainly that they came out equal. Of course, unscrupulous merchants could alter the scale’s calibration and still cheat his customers. Local governments often had very severe penalties for this kind of cheating because they understood that the entire system of trade was dependent upon maintaining trust. By developing a reputation as a town that enforces fair trading, the town could attract more customers, more merchants and collect higher taxes.
Other standard units of measure relied on the parties to the deal being familiar with certain amounts. Most farmers could look at a bushel of grain or of apples and tell by eye that the measure was correct within a pretty small tolerance.
Today, we are surrounded by standard and measuring devices and we rely on them entirely. The scales at the fish market, or deli counter are infallible as far as most people are concerned and the total they offer is never questioned. Gas pumps measure gallons of gasoline to the hundred or even thousandth of a gallon with accuracy. One reason why we don’t question these scales today is that there are government inspectors who check scales and certify them accurate and fit for commercial transactions. Every gas pump has a Dept of Weight & Measures sticker on it dated and signed by the inspector who last tested its accuracy.
We trust the technology of the scales that we use in commerce implicitly, and our system of commerce depends on that trust. Yet there is one scale that many feel routinely makes inaccurate readings or tells outright lies. The bathroom scale that tells us our own weight, it seems, is not to be trusted.
